200 Passenger Cruise Ship Sick

Norovirus on Cruises: Over 200 Passengers Fall Ill

Outbreak Affects Royal Caribbean and Carnival Ships

Reported Cases Reach Nearly 400

In a series of unfortunate incidents, norovirus outbreaks on multiple cruise ships have left hundreds of passengers and crew members sick. The highly contagious virus, known for causing severe vomiting and diarrhea, has affected at least two vessels operated by Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruise Line.

According to reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Princess Cruises ship Regal Princess reported 112 cases of gastrointestinal illness, primarily norovirus, during a voyage that ended on February 26th. The ship was forced to return to port in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, ahead of schedule.

On the same day, the Carnival Magic cruise ship reported an outbreak of norovirus, affecting 107 passengers and crew. The vessel was also forced to cut its trip short and dock in New Orleans, Louisiana. The majority of the sick individuals reported experiencing vomiting and diarrhea.

In a separate incident, nearly 200 passengers on two different Carnival Cruise Line ships, the Liberty of the Seas and the Paradise, reported similar symptoms. The Liberty of the Seas was sailing in the Caribbean while the Paradise was on a voyage to Mexico.

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that can spread easily through contact with contaminated surfaces or by consuming contaminated food or water. The CDC recommends practicing good hygiene to prevent infection, including frequent handwashing, avoiding contact with sick individuals, and disinfecting surfaces.

Cruise lines are taking steps to address the outbreaks, including enhanced cleaning and disinfection protocols, and offering medical assistance to affected passengers. However, norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships are not uncommon, and passengers should be aware of the potential risks and take precautions to protect themselves.
